Glucophage (metformin) is an oral medicine prescribed to control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. This drug can be combined with insulin. Glucophage is not intended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. You mustn’t take this drug in case of having kidney disease or being in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis. One rare condition reported by patients taking Glucophage is lactic acidosis. It is characterized by lightheadedness, fainting, stomach pain, shortness of breath, sleepiness, weakness, muscle pain and cold feeling. Every patient taking this drug must know the signs of low blood sugar, which include irritability, headache, hunger, confusion, drowsiness, tremors, fast heartbeat, seizure, and fainting.

Before asking your doctor for a prescription discuss any of the medical conditions you feel can interfere with the treatment, such as a history of heart disease or liver disease. Glucophage is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. However, this medicine passes into breast milk and can affect the health of a nursing baby. Do not start breastfeeding before talking to your health care provider. Headache, mild nausea, diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, general weakness are all the most commonly reported side effects.
